A physician associate may be listed under either board. A medical doctor licensed only in another state can register with the Board of Licensure in Medicine to give consultative services only, at the request of a Maine-licensed clinician who stays in charge of your care, as described below and in our guide to telehealth across state lines.
Which pharmacy dispenses. Ask which pharmacy will fill and ship the prescription, then look it up in the Board of Pharmacy's license search.
How you will be evaluated. Ask how the program evaluates you before any prescription, and whether it may ask to see you in person. Whether Maine's telehealth practice rule requires an in-person visit before a telehealth prescription depends on conditions.
What the price covers. What Maine's telehealth statute says. Title 32 of the Maine Revised Statutes lets a person licensed by the Board of Licensure in Medicine provide telehealth services within the scope of that license and in accordance with standards of practice (section 3300-BB). It counts a real-time interaction by interactive audio or video as a synchronous encounter, so a live phone call is a telehealth visit (section 3300-AA), and it leaves the standards and restrictions for each form of telehealth to the Board's rules (section 3300-EE). Under section 3300-D, the Board may register a physician who is not licensed to practice medicine in Maine to provide consultative services through interstate telehealth, only as requested by a Maine-licensed physician, advanced practice registered nurse or physician associate who keeps ultimate authority over the patient's diagnosis, care and treatment; a registered physician may not open an office, meet with patients or receive calls from patients in Maine. The statute text is current through October 1, 2026; these sections carry a repeal date of January 1, 2027 (Public Law 2025, chapter 738), so check the law in force after that date.

A doctor of osteopathic medicine is licensed by the Board of Osteopathic Licensure instead.
