Minnesota telehealth rules: A physician-patient relationship may be established through telehealth in Minnesota, and a physician providing care by telehealth is held to the same standards of practice and conduct as for in-person care (Minnesota Statutes, section 147.033). Whether any medication is appropriate is the treating clinician's decision.
Before you start an assessment with any program in Minnesota, check five things.
Who prescribes. Ask for the prescriber's full name and credential, then check the license with the board that issues it. For a physician, that is the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice: use the License Search on the Board's website or the physician license lookup in the verified facts. For any other credential, ask which Minnesota board issued it and check there.
A physician licensed only in another state may provide medical services to a patient in Minnesota by interstate telehealth under Minnesota Statutes, section 147.032 when they meet its conditions, including a license without restriction where they practice, no office or patient meetings in Minnesota, and a yearly registration with the Board. Frequently asked questions about GLP-1 in Minnesota
Can a doctor licensed in another state treat me in Minnesota by telehealth?
Yes, under conditions. Minnesota Statutes, section 147.032 lets a physician without a Minnesota license provide medical services by interstate telehealth to a patient in Minnesota if the physician is licensed without restriction in the state they provide telehealth from, has never had a license revoked or restricted, does not open an office, meet patients or take patient calls in Minnesota, and registers with the Board of Medical Practice every year, paying an initial application fee and an annual registration fee. The registration step does not apply to emergencies, to care given less than once a month or to fewer than ten patients a year, or to consultation with a Minnesota-licensed physician who keeps ultimate authority over diagnosis and care.
Is a telehealth visit held to a lower standard in Minnesota?
No. Statute 147.033 states that a physician providing telehealth is held to the same standards of practice and conduct as for in-person health care services, and that a physician-patient relationship may be established through telehealth. Minnesota's health records law, sections 144.291 to 144.298, also applies to interstate telehealth.
