Wegovy vs Ozempic: Compare Uses, Pills and Injections

Compare Wegovy and Ozempic injections and tablets using their current U.S. labels, then organize questions for your clinician, pharmacist and health plan.

Short answer

Wegovy and Ozempic contain semaglutide, but their injections and tablets have different labeled uses and patient groups. Wegovy includes adult weight-management uses; Ozempic labels concern adult type 2 diabetes and specified additional indications. Compare the exact form with your clinician rather than treating the brands as interchangeable.

Wegovy and Ozempic both contain semaglutide, but that does not make every product or form the same. Their current U.S. prescribing information lists different uses and patient groups. The useful first question is: Which exact brand and form are we comparing, and what condition is it intended to treat?

This Wegovy vs Ozempic guide compares injections and tablets for adults in the United States. It uses the manufacturer's prescribing information checked on October 13, 2026: Wegovy revised June 2026, Ozempic injection revised May 2026, and the joint Rybelsus/Ozempic tablet label revised January 2026. These are document revision dates, not dates when a new form was approved.

Wegovy vs Ozempic at a glance

The four sections below separate the forms. They summarize uses in the current labels; they do not determine your eligibility, compare doses or replace a prescribing conversation.

Wegovy injection

Route: Injection under the skin

Adult uses listed in the current U.S. label: Weight management in adults with obesity, or overweight with a weight-related condition; reduction of major cardiovascular events in adults with established cardiovascular disease and obesity or overweight. The injection also has a separate, specific MASH indication described below.

Wegovy tablets

Route: Oral tablets

Adult uses listed in the current U.S. label: Weight management in adults with obesity, or overweight with a weight-related condition; reduction of major cardiovascular events in adults with established cardiovascular disease and obesity or overweight.

Ozempic injection

Route: Injection under the skin

Adult uses listed in the current U.S. label: Blood-sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes; reduction of major cardiovascular events in adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease; specified kidney and cardiovascular outcomes in adults with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease.

Ozempic tablets

Route: Oral tablets

Adult uses listed in the current U.S. label: Blood-sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes; reduction of major cardiovascular events in adults with type 2 diabetes at high risk for those events.

Sources: Wegovy prescribing information, Ozempic injection prescribing information, and Rybelsus/Ozempic tablet prescribing information.

For Wegovy, the label's weight-management and cardiovascular uses are alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. The Ozempic injection and tablet labels list blood-sugar control as an adjunct to diet and exercise. A brand name alone does not show which indication or patient group applies to a particular prescription.

Start with the product and form

Older injection-only comparisons can miss an important distinction. The current prescribing-information files include Wegovy injection and tablets, plus separate Ozempic injection and tablet information. The joint oral label names both Rybelsus and Ozempic tablets. That does not establish a universal retirement date for Rybelsus or tell you what your pharmacy currently stocks.

Read the brand and form on the prescription or package, then ask your pharmacist to confirm them. If an online article says “Ozempic,” check whether it means the injection or the tablets before applying anything it says about uses or directions.

The tablet label also states that its two tablet formulations are not substitutable on a milligram-for-milligram basis. This guide gives no conversion or switching instructions. Do not use the shared ingredient, similar packaging or a comparison chart to exchange products yourself. Read the separate tablet label.

How do their weight-management uses differ?

The Wegovy label lists reducing excess body weight and maintaining weight reduction long term in specified groups. For the adults covered here, those groups are people with obesity, or overweight with at least one weight-related condition. Both Wegovy injection and tablets have adult weight-management uses.

The current Ozempic injection and tablet indications concern type 2 diabetes and the specific additional uses in the four-form summary above. They do not list weight management as an indication. This describes their labeled uses; it is not a prediction about an individual's weight or an instruction to seek a particular prescription.

If weight management is the goal, ask the clinician which exact product has a relevant indication and how your circumstances affect suitability. If blood-sugar treatment is the goal, ask the same question with that goal stated clearly. Neither the diagnosis nor a search result settles the choice on its own.

Keep heart, kidney and liver indications separate

“Heart benefits” is too broad a description for comparing these labels. Wegovy's listed cardiovascular use concerns adults with established cardiovascular disease and obesity or overweight. Ozempic injection's cardiovascular use concerns adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease. The Ozempic tablet label instead identifies adults with type 2 diabetes at high risk for major cardiovascular events.

Ozempic injection also lists reducing the risk of sustained kidney-function decline, end-stage kidney disease and cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease. Do not carry that injection indication over to tablets or generalize it to everyone with kidney disease. The injection label is the source for this distinction.

Wegovy injection has an additional indication for adults with noncirrhotic metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, or MASH, with moderate-to-advanced fibrosis. It has accelerated approval based on improvement in MASH and fibrosis; continued approval may depend on confirmatory clinical benefit. That injection-specific use should not be applied to tablets. The Wegovy label also lists weight management with Wegovy injection for adolescents aged 12 years and older with obesity; that population is outside this adult guide.

These differences help identify the right question for your clinician. Counting indications does not establish that one brand is better for every person.

Which is better: Wegovy or Ozempic?

There is no universal answer in a brand-comparison chart. The relevant question is which exact product fits the condition being treated, your medical history and the plan your prescribing clinician recommends.

This guide does not rank weight-loss results, compare percentages from different studies or infer that a higher numerical tablet dose produces better outcomes than an injection. The shared ingredient and different label indications do not establish those conclusions.

For a useful discussion, ask the clinician to explain the expected benefits, limitations and product-specific risks. Bring your current medicine list and ask what in your history matters for the decision. Read the exact product's full prescribing information and Medication Guide. This article is not a complete safety review or a contraindication checklist.

Do not start, stop, combine or switch prescription products using this comparison. If a change is recommended, obtain individualized instructions from your prescriber and ask your pharmacist to resolve any mismatch between the prescription, label and package.

Insurance questions need the exact brand and form

Before comparing costs, identify what is actually being quoted. Ask your health plan and pharmacy about the brand, form and indication being discussed, any authorization or documentation questions, and the amount you would be asked to pay.

Record who supplied the answer and when. Ask who handles a denial, renewal or coverage change. If the answer is incomplete, keep it as an open question; an unanswered coverage question is not confirmation of coverage or a zero price. This guide makes no prediction about your plan, discount eligibility or pharmacy supply.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Wegovy and Ozempic the same medicine?

Both contain semaglutide, but the exact brand and form matter. Their U.S. labels list different uses and patient groups. The shared ingredient does not make products automatically interchangeable.

Do Wegovy and Ozempic have pills as well as injections?

The current manufacturer prescribing information includes Wegovy injection and tablets, plus separate Ozempic injection and tablet information. The oral label names both Rybelsus and Ozempic tablets. Confirm the exact prescribed form and pharmacy availability with your pharmacist.

Is Ozempic labeled for weight loss?

The current Ozempic injection and tablet indications do not list weight management. Both forms list blood-sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes and specified cardiovascular uses, with conditions that differ by form. The kidney indication is listed for Ozempic injection, not Ozempic tablets, and requires type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease. Wegovy has weight-management indications in specified groups.

Can I replace Wegovy with Ozempic or change between tablets and injections?

Do not substitute or switch products using a comparison chart. A prescribing clinician should assess the exact product and your circumstances, provide any individualized change instructions, and involve the pharmacist when the prescription or package needs clarification.

Will insurance cover Wegovy or Ozempic?

This guide cannot predict your coverage. Ask your health plan and pharmacy about the exact brand, form and indication, authorization or documentation questions, current patient cost and who handles a denial or renewal. Record the source and date of each answer.
